I've purchased a sata III to USB 3 adapter and cannot get it to work. Am I doing something wrong.

I've connected it to a SATA 3 drive, powered it up (red light is on) and connected it to a computer and a laptop....both times nothing. The HDD is not spinning up and the OS (windows xp and windows 7) doesn't detect the device. I think the USB ports are USB 2 but I thought they would be backwards compatiable? Is this not the case?

Any help greatly appreaciated.

Hello,

I guess you have connected the external PSU to the adapter?

This should spin the drive even with a faulty data path.

It is backwards compatible with USB 2

Yes. Connected the PSU. The red light was on. Interestingly enough I left it plugged in overnight to the comptuer. This morning an addition blue light was on, and all was well. I started copying data to a SATA III drive which was fine. Suddenly though, the blue light dissappeared (red light still on) and the USB connection was lost and I'm back to the original position of nothing working.

Sometimes we have seen certain USB 2 ports not working very well with USB 3 cables, does the cable feel like its making a good connection?

Other than that, I'd recommend a return to see if its a faulty product.

Yes. I've tried it on several ports and they feel quite a soild connection.
