In theory.... this is easy peasy. The iPad is running an app by Stratospherix called FileBrowser.
FB is asking for username and password even though there are no restrictions on anyone to access the folders.

The help on the stratopherix website suggests that some older NAS's use a sawn off Linux system called Samba and that this was, in it's earlier incarnations, pretty buggy.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me please?

Thanks.

It does use samba.

I can't remember exactly, but don't you have to enable anonymous sharing?

My daughter turned up with a new Win7 PC and in trying to get it to join the pre-Win7 Workgroup, I noticed that in supplying the correct username and password to the NAS drive, access was always denied. Upon managing to join the Workgroup (which is not the default name) it could see the NAS folders and files. Is this information either relevent or helpful given that the App being used on the iPad doesn't seem to want to know about Workgroups or even Homegroups.

Thanks :)
